Jul. 29th, 2013 09:11 amThe Jaeger program was created to fight fire with fire. The kaiju came from deep beneath the pacific, and while they aren’t nearly as large as the ones in the movie, they come in swarms as opposed to one or two at a time – and they look more like this.
They are a very real threat, and their sheer numbers can easily overwhelm even the most powerful of military personnel and equipment. Their hides are like leather, and are as thick and impenetrable as canon!kaiju. Their blood is equally as toxic and their teeth bone shatteringly powerful, so direct hand to hand combat was quickly ruled ineffective. People kept dying.
Powerful suits of armor were built and controlled by pilots that could ‘Drift’ with the machines, merging human and robotics together, but eventually this proved to be too dangerous for the pilots. The ‘Drift’ caused severe side effects that ranged from nosebleeds to seizures and in many cases, death. The problem was, the suits worked, and no one wanted to give up just yet, but too many pilots were collapsing on scene and during battle, and they were losing too many of these expensive Jaegers in the process. The program was nearly sunset until a man named Tendo Choi came forward and suggested they take specially trained humans and merged them physically with the machines prior to the Drift. This way, they were already a part of the system – synthetic androids, created to function inside of the suits and Drift, but still be controlled by two pilots from a more remote location, where the ship could safely be secure.
Piloting from home base didn’t work, because they were too far – the two Jaeger pilots needed to be on site at all times in order to Drift with and control the Jaeger.
The program was volunteer only, though only those that were Drift compatible could enter the program. This severely limited their options, but humanity was running out of options. Testing began immediately, and there were several failures before Jaeger tech was really perfected. There aren’t many Jaegers, because not everyone can hold up to the Cybernetics needed to create the ability to Drift remotely.
Eventually, the system worked like this:
Human being is integrated with machinery; ports are added in order to allow them to merge more completely with the machine. Bone structure is reinforced with steel, and internal, vital organs are replaced and upgraded with synthetics that allow for prolonged exposure to radiation and Drifting. This synthetic human becomes part of the Jaeger, and will be referenced as such from here on out. Code names are taken – their real names are redacted and filed away for security and secrecy sake.
Two pilots that are Drift compatible work with the Jaeger from on site battle stations that can quickly be dropped in and retrieved via chopper. These two are the Jaegers eyes and ears - they guide the Jaeger and essentially pilot and ‘steer’ them.
